Website Tone of Voice: The Simple Change That Could Boost Your Sales

|

Let’s talk about tone of voice. It’s one of those things that can quietly make or break your website, and yet, so many businesses completely overlook it.

I was recently looking at a website for a small, independent maker. Lovely products. Years of experience. But… the website read like a pensioner selling bits and bobs for pin money, rather than a skilled craftsman with decades of expertise. And that’s the problem.

If your tone of voice doesn’t tell the right story, you can accidentally sell yourself short.

So, what exactly is tone of voice?

It’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it.

Your tone of voice is the personality that comes through your words. It should reflect your brand, build trust, and, ultimately, help people decide they want to buy from you (or work with you, or book your services… you get the idea).

Think about it like this:
Would you rather buy a luxury sofa from someone who sounds like a trusted interior expert… or from someone who sounds like they’ve cobbled it together in their shed for a bit of pocket money? Same sofa. Very different perception.

What happens when you get it wrong?

  • You sound amateur, even if you’re a pro.
  • You unintentionally undersell your skills, products or services.
  • You create confusion; people don’t get what makes you different.
  • Worse still, they click away and buy from someone else who does a better job of telling their story.

Getting it right: Tone of voice in action

When I work on websites, I always say, the words should feel like you.
If you’re an expert with decades of experience? Sound confident, credible, and approachable.
If you’re a creative? Let your personality shine through.
If you’re in a luxury market? Keep it polished, warm, and aspirational.

But what you should never do is:

  • Default to dry, corporate waffle (unless you want to sound like a bank).
  • Let your words make you sound like you’ve got one foot in retirement (unless that’s genuinely your vibe).
  • Hide your passion and experience behind bland, generic copy.

Does your website sound like your business?

If you’re not sure, here’s a quick test:

✅ Read your homepage out loud. Does it sound like how you talk to real-life customers?
✅ Are you confident it reflects your experience, your style, and your values?
✅ If you covered your logo, would people still recognise your personality shining through the words?

If the answer’s no, don’t panic. It’s fixable. And honestly, tweaking your tone of voice is one of the quickest ways to help your website work harder for you.
