Why Your Website Needs a Privacy Policy

Why Your Website Needs a Privacy Policy (Even If You Think It Doesn’t)

Let’s talk about the oh-so-thrilling world of Privacy Policies.
I know what you’re thinking: “Privacy Policy? But my website is just a cute little corner of the internet – I’m not exactly MI6!”
Well, whether you’re running a global business or simply sharing your dog’s daily outfits, the fact remains — you still need a Privacy Policy.

“But I’m Not Collecting Any Data!” – Oh, You Definitely Are

It’s easy to believe that if you’re not actively asking people for their blood type and grandmother’s maiden name, you’re in the clear.
Sadly, that’s not how the internet works. Websites are sneaky little things (even yours) and they collect data in all sorts of ways you might not even realise:

  • Contact forms – If you ask for someone’s name and email address, you’re collecting personal data.
  • Newsletter sign-ups – Yup, more data.
  • Cookies – No, not the delicious kind. Tracking cookies monitor visitors’ behaviour, and they’re on pretty much every website by default.
  • Google Analytics – If you’re tracking how many people are visiting your site (and who isn’t?), you’re collecting data.
  • Embedded content – Got a YouTube video on your site? That’s collecting data too.

In short: if people are visiting your website (and we sincerely hope they are), you’re collecting something.

Your Responsibility (AKA Why You’re Now a Mini Data Guardian)

When you collect any kind of personal data, even accidentally, you become responsible for protecting it. It’s a bit like when someone lends you their puppy: you didn’t necessarily ask for it, but now you have to make sure it doesn’t run into traffic.

Data protection laws like GDPR (in Europe), UK GDPR, CCPA (California), and others around the world require you to:

  • Tell visitors what data you’re collecting
  • Explain why you’re collecting it
  • Share how it’s being stored and protected
  • Inform them how they can access or delete their data

A Privacy Policy is an essential step in being transparent and building trust — but it’s not the only thing you need.

“I’ll Just Write My Own Privacy Policy…” Will You, Though?

You might be thinking, “I’ll just write one myself — surely that’s good enough.”
But here’s the thing:
Are you confident it meets all current privacy laws?
Do you know what to update when laws change?

Privacy regulations shift constantly, and unless you’re glued to legal updates (which, let’s face it, most of us aren’t), that DIY policy might quickly become outdated — or worse, non-compliant.

A Smarter Way: Termageddon

To make things easier (and a whole lot safer), I’ve partnered with Termageddon, a brilliant tool designed to help you generate policies tailored to your website and business.

They offer auto-updating Privacy Policies, Terms and Conditions, Cookie Policies and more — which means when laws change (as they often do), your policies update too.

This helps you work towards legal compliance, saves you time, and gives your website a more professional edge.

But remember: having the right policies in place is just one part of the puzzle. As a website owner, you’re still responsible for things like responding to data access or deletion requests, and handling user information properly.

And just so we’re clear — this isn’t legal advice. I always recommend speaking to a solicitor for guidance specific to your business. (That said, many solicitors love Termageddon too, so it’s worth asking their thoughts!)

In Summary

Even if your website is small, you’re still collecting data — and with that comes responsibility.
A solid Privacy Policy helps you be more transparent, builds trust with your audience, and gets you on the right track with your legal obligations.

If you want to sort this quickly and confidently, Termageddon is a fantastic solution to help you protect your business and your website.
