How to Turn a “Dead” Website into Your Best Marketing Tool

“My Website Isn’t Working!” (Spoiler: It’s Not Broken, It’s Just Bored)

You wouldn’t believe how many times I hear this:

“My website isn’t working!”

Cue dramatic sigh and eye-roll (mine, not theirs)

Now, this declaration usually falls into one of two camps:

  1. Someone with a website so ancient it probably still thinks MySpace is relevant.
  2. Someone who just launched their shiny new site, did absolutely zero marketing… and is now shocked that there isn’t a stampede of clients outside their digital door.

So… how exactly are you marketing your website?

At this point, I usually ask, and 9 times out of 10, the response is something like:

“Umm… nothing? Do I need to?”

Or my personal favourite:

“I get most of my work from word of mouth.”

Lovely. But unless your clients are shouting your URL from a rooftop, your “word of mouth” strategy is about as effective as whispering into a hurricane.

Here’s the hard truth: if you do nothing, you’ll get… drumroll pleasenothing.

Imagine Your Website as a Shop No One Knows Exists

Think of it like this, you’ve opened a beautiful new boutique, but it’s tucked down a dark alley, has no sign, and you’ve told no one it’s there. Yet, you’re standing by the till, waiting for someone to magically wander in.

Spoiler: they won’t.

You need to SHOUT about your business. Wave your digital flag. Hang your metaphorical “Open for Business” sign and let the internet know you exist. Especially if you’re in a crowded industry where everyone’s fighting for attention.

Your Website = Your Storefront

Let’s play pretend for a second.

If your website were a physical shop, what would you do differently?

You’d probably:

  • Make your shop window irresistible.
  • Make sure your name and what you do are everywhere.
  • Offer an experience people remember.

That’s exactly how your Home Page should function, it’s your shop window.
If it doesn’t make people stop, stare, and think “Ooh, what’s in here?”, then it’s time for a refresh.

Your website should feel like an experience, not a dusty corner of the internet that time forgot.

So Why Isn’t Your Website Working?

Because it’s lonely. Neglected. Unloved.

You can’t just launch your website and hope for miracles. You have to work it — like a digital Beyoncé.
