Want a Website That Converts? Pair Style with Strategy

A good-looking website might get you compliments. A strategically designed one gets you clients.

Of course design matters. But style without strategy is like lipstick on a ghost: all show, no substance. If your website isn’t bringing in enquiries, or it’s bringing in the wrong ones, it isn’t doing its job.

The sweet spot is where style meets strategy. That’s when you get a website that converts the right people, not just anyone with a pulse and a budget.

Signs your website isn’t converting

That means:

  • You get very few enquiries, even though people visit
  • You get plenty of enquiries, but from the wrong people
  • People seem confused about what you actually offer
  • You keep being asked for services you no longer want to do
  • Enquiries often start with “do you offer discounts?”

Sound familiar? Your website may be sending the wrong signals.

Style gets attention, strategy gets enquiries

Some websites sparkle but don’t sell. Others are carefully planned but look flat and forgettable. You deserve both.

Think of your website like a beautiful shop. You’re greeted by something lovely, you instantly know where to go, and you leave feeling you’ve made the right choice. That’s exactly what a website that converts does, just online.

Seven ways to create a website that converts

1. Say what you do in five seconds

Have you ever landed on a website and had no idea what the business actually does? Your visitors decide within seconds whether to stay. So make sure your home page says clearly what you do, who you do it for and where you work, before anything else.

2. Speak to your dream client, not everyone

Your website should work like a filter, not a free-for-all. It should attract the right people and gently put off the wrong ones.

If you offer a luxury, high-touch service but your website looks and sounds budget and casual, you’ll keep attracting the wrong fit. And if you try to appeal to everyone, you won’t truly connect with anyone. Write for the client you want now, not the one you had two years ago.

3. Show the work you want more of

Don’t just share everything you’ve done. Share the work you want to be booked for.

It’s far better to show 30 of your very best pieces than 300 average ones. Group your work by service or location too, as this helps visitors find what they’re looking for and gives your SEO a boost.

When I redesigned the website for Scott at The Edge Photography, he was happy with his existing images. As a former photographer, I gently disagreed, because styles move on and couples notice. Once he saw his fresh images on the new home page, he agreed straight away.

4. Put your face on it

I know, hardly anyone loves having their photo taken. But people buy from people, and a warm, professional photo of you builds trust instantly. If your About photo is years old, or missing altogether, a personal branding shoot is one of the best investments you can make.

5. Give it room to breathe

Have you ever visited a website and felt overwhelmed? Usually it’s because there’s too much crammed in: too many images, too much text and not enough white space.

Some of the most successful websites are also the simplest. So be brave, cut what isn’t needed and let your best content shine.

6. Invest in your words

Your Home and About pages are where people decide whether they like you, so the words matter. Your tone should reflect your level of service and your personality, whether that’s calm and luxurious or warm and playful. If writing isn’t your strength, investing in professional copy for these two pages alone can make a real difference.

7. Make the next step obvious

Every page should tell visitors exactly what to do next: book a call, request a quote or check availability. Make your booking journey smooth and simple, especially on a phone, because if people have to hunt for your contact details, most won’t bother.

What a website that converts looks like

When style and strategy work together, you get:

  • A clean, on-brand design that reflects your values
  • Headlines that grab attention and copy that speaks to your dream client
  • Easy navigation that works beautifully on mobile
  • A booking journey that feels smooth and obvious
  • A website you can easily update yourself

That’s when your website becomes your hardest-working team member, bringing in enquiries while you’re walking the dog, with clients or finally taking a day off.
